Empowering Young Minds: Navigating the Health and Wellbeing Module of the Curriculum for Wales. The Character Development Award offers children and young individuals a unique opportunity to cultivate the confidence to think independently and make positive, well-informed decisions. By learning to consider the impact of their actions and behavior on themselves, others, and the world around them, we not only align with the Curriculum for Wales but also equip young people to become content, resilient, and proactive members of society, ready to tackle life's challenges.

This transformative award is seamlessly integrated into the school day, with two-hour sessions held consistently each week throughout the academic year. Whenever possible, sessions take place outdoors, fostering a kinaesthetic approach to learning. Each student receives their own personal learning journal, and the program culminates in a memorable graduation ceremony at the end of the year.

What does the programme include?

Team Building & Leadership

Cultivating Lifelong Teamwork Skills: Our program empowers students to collaborate, communicate, and express ideas effectively, irrespective of their personality type. It also equips them with leadership qualities by subjecting them to challenging, stress-inducing tasks. We believe that leadership can be developed, not just inherited

Mindfulness

Incorporated into the program are mindfulness and mental wellbeing sessions. These sessions create an environment where students can experience a sense of presence and relaxation, enabling open discussions on topics like managing anger, anxiety, and coping strategies. How frequently do students get the chance to sit in serene silence, free from distractions, and tune in to the soothing sounds of nature?

Health & Wellbeing, Building Resilience, Good Mental Health

The rising obesity rates are placing a significant burden on our healthcare system. Sedentary lifestyles, often due to prolonged screen time, are adversely affecting our well-being. In response, we've collaboratively designed this program with educators and leading health and well-being experts, ensuring its seamless alignment with the curriculum for Wales.

Our program's core objective is to foster individual growth and enhance resilience against Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Moreover, it will contribute positively to students' overall well-being and healthcare, helping to alleviate the strain on the healthcare system.

The Playmaker Leadership Award

Often the most daunting experience primary school pupils have to experience, but if dealt with effectively it shouldn't be. Having the confidence, resilience and self belief that the experience will be positive massively reduces the anxiety experience by pupils. A number of pupils that have taken part in the Character Development Award have held the programme solely responsible for their success within the first few weeks in secondary school. Existing sessions have involved; litter picks, sponsored runs, regular visits to the elderly, Christmas hampers and collecting for the food bank to name a few.

Social Action Project

An integral aspect of the Character Development Award is the Social Action Project. This initiative provides children and young individuals with the opportunity to collaborate on local community projects aimed at enhancing the quality of life for others. Students take on the responsibility of organizing the sessions, devising project plans, and executing the necessary preparations and activities. This experience empowers them to take initiative and work together toward a shared objective, fostering a strong sense of community and responsibility.

Example of a 2 hour session

Check in

In the classroom with pupils completing the beginning of their reflective journal.

This vital part of the session allows pupils to consider how they are feeling and share with the instructor and the class. This provides a great foundation to build relationships between pupils and the instructor, but also to take the time to think about how they are actually feeling. The opportunity to reflect on their previous week often leads to a feeling of appreciation of the opportunities they have had that they hadn’t considered before.

Icebreaker & front load

Pupils taken outside for the majority of the session where possible.

An activity which usually involves mixing friends groups up, raising the heart rate and allowing pupils to enjoy the fun task. This sets the tone for the main activities.

Main activities

Outside (inside if weather isn’t suitable).

Usually 2 activities will be planned focusing on the weeks key qualities. Activities will be stopped and reflected on during, and after each one.

Reflection & Check out

Back in the classroom.

Pupils will reflect on the session and the qualities they have used, why they were important and how they can be transferred from the classroom to everyday life. The journals will be completed and the instructor will check how pupils are feeling before closing the session.
